What happens if you lose your passport abroad?

Losing your passport while travelling abroad can be a stressful experience. You can get out of this sticky situation with minimum expenditure provided you are covered with Travel Insurance. Read this post to get tips on how to handle such a situation.

Make sure you make a note of your passport number and a photocopy of the personal details page. Keep one copy with you and leave one back home.

If your passport is lost/stolen overseas, report it to the local police immediately and then contact the nearest Indian embassy. This is very important to ensure you get either  new passport or emergency travel documents instead of your original passport.

Your Travel Insurance company is liable to reimburse you up to the limit mentioned in your policy document to cover all the direct expenses you incur to get a new passport or emergency travel documents instead of your original passport.

Please note your insurance company will pay you only in case you have made a police complaint within 24 hours of losing your passport. Make sure you obtain a copy of the complaint as the same has to be submitted as proof to your insurance company.

Do not leave your passport unattended. Keep your passport separate from other important items both at home and when travelling. Your insurance company will pay for the expenses incurred to get a new passport/emergency travel documents only if you lost it in a public place and not in a private area/vehicle, unless the private area was forcibly broken into.
